Back to the wall

I’ve had an opportunity over the last month to work directly on the wall at a project space through my MA at SFU. I’ve been working with Rob Kitsos to think through the gesture of my drawings outside of marks. While the resulting drawing shares much with the work I’ve been doing as part of en faisant, and relies on the same gesture, the doing of the drawing has felt dramatically different. The movement work has helped me to keep my body in the drawing longer, and between pauses.

”The works selected meander through notions of the womb, flesh and figure, and seductive gestures contrasted by austere spaces and compositions. There is mystery and intrigue that seduce, while playful gestures delight, then all is grounded by stark structures and ominous forms."  Marianne Katzman – ART DEALER/CURATOR

They are lost as soon as they are made

I’m so please to have a text included in Karen Zalamea’s publication, They are lost as soon as they are made. It was a joy to curate this project when it took place at Access, and I’m so thrilled to see these photographic jewels in this handheld format.

The artist book presents the full suite of 80 colour photographs from the series They are lost as soon as they are made, with essays by Katie Belcher and Sara Matthews.

To produce the images, Karen Zalamea built a large-format 4 x 5 analogue film camera for which she created biconvex lenses by freezing local water samples in specially fabricated moulds. Using these technological implements, Zalamea photographed the Icelandic landscape. The work explores the camera and its optics as sites for experimentation, the translational capacity of photography, the perimeters of vision, and the possibilities of the landscape to reveal and render its own image.

Not Sent Letters and Guests

I’ve been invited to contribute to Not Sent Letters and Guests, and have chosen to debut an experimental reading, which rose with each breath they exhaled. “At once a score and its performance, this work is prompted by texts by Zola and Dumas, the sensuality and violence of culinary markets and processes, and avian sounds of dogged desire.” The evening features
